The name Marklew occurs in a parish entries from the mid 16th Century. The Birmingham and Lichfield parishes have many entries during the 18th Century from which my line is derived. The name is now most common in the West Midlands particularly around Coleshill, Polesworth and Tamworth.
The name is derived from an ancient seat in East Sussex near Heathfield, now called Marklye. Grid reference TQ5822.
The Marklew name is of Anglo-Saxon origin. It is made up from the old english 'mearc' meaning mark, border or boundary and 'hleam' meaning low hill or mound. The latter part is found in many place names ending in -loe , -lam, -lem and -ley.
The time line gives a 250 year picture of my family tree while the history pages describe the family from 1800 onwards.
